The Research PassportFor information about the Research Passport, honorary research contracts, honorary clinical contracts and NHS employees working across NHS organisations please see the comprehensive online guidance now available on the NIHR website http://www.nihr.ac.uk/systems_research_passports.aspx The resource pack/ research passport was developed under the umbrella of the UKCRC by the NHS R&D Forum and the four UK Health Departments. Now that the UKCRC has completed that task, each of the four UK health departments are overseeing their own implementation plans for the Research Passport system. In England, the Research Passport system is being rolled out across the Comprehensive Research Networks. The UKCRN hosted two training sessions for Local Comprehensive Research Network (CLRN) managers and research managers in January 2008. These were organised by the UKCRN’s Ian Goodall (i.goodall@ukcrn.org.uk) who is responsible for its implementation in England. He received support from Rhian Hughes who led a successful pilot of the research passport in Staffordshire and Janet Messer of the NHS R&D Forum. The CLRN leads will lead training sessions with research management and HR from local universities and the NHS. Northern Ireland is committed to rolling out the Research Passport System with the help of a joint Health and Social Care (HSC)/University working group with appropriate representatives from Human Resources and R&D during 2008. Local contact for more information: Frances Burns, Research Manager, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, Research Office, 02890 632224 or Nicola Armstrong, Programme Manager - Nursing, Research and Development Office, 02890 55 3617. The Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Executive is actively supporting the Research Passport initiative. The system is being rolled out as part of development of the National Research Governance System in Scotland. There is close collaboration between human resources and research support departments in both the NHS and university sectors. Local contact for more information: liz.coote@nhs.net. In Wales, the roll out of the Research Passport system is also quite advanced. The Wales Office of Research and Development for Health and Social Care (WORD) issued a Welsh Health Circular (WHC) in November 2007 which endorsed the roll out of the Research Passport system and the “Research in the NHS – Human Resource (HR) Good Practice resource pack”. WORD sent letters to key personnel in NHS Human Resources and within Higher Education Institutions endorsing and promoting the roll out.
